What is vatnode?

vatnode is an EU VAT number validation API. You send a VAT ID, and vatnode checks it in real time against the official EU VIES system, enriches it with national registry data where available, and returns a clean JSON response with the validity result, company details, VAT rates for that country, and a timestamped audit reference. It’s built for developers adding VAT validation to invoicing, checkout, or supplier-onboarding flows.

What a request looks like

One endpoint does the core job: GET /v1/vat/{vatId}, authenticated with your API key as a Bearer token. The VAT ID includes its two-letter country prefix, for example IE6388047V. The call is curl https://api.vatnode.dev/v1/vat/IE6388047V -H "Authorization: Bearer vat_live_…".

What comes back

• valid – whether the number is valid and active.
• companyName and companyAddress – as VIES returns them; they can be null for some countries.
• Registry data such as registration date, legal form, industry, registry code and tax ID, for the countries where a national registry is connected (see the country coverage reference).
• countryVat – the local tax name, abbreviation and rate tiers for the company’s country, so you can label and rate an invoice from the same call.
• checkId and verifiedAt – vatnode’s own reference and timestamp for the check.
• source – which system produced the answer: VIES, CACHE, or a national registry code.

Coverage

All 27 EU member states plus Northern Ireland (XI) are supported. Greece uses the VIES prefix EL.
