Can I get notified when a customer’s VAT status changes?

Yes – on Starter and above you can add a VAT number as a monitoring subscription, and vatnode re-validates it daily and fires a webhook when something changes – for example the number becoming invalid or company details changing. This is useful for ongoing supplier or customer relationships rather than one-off checks.

What triggers a webhook

• VAT_BECAME_INVALID – the number is deregistered or no longer active in VIES.
• VAT_BECAME_VALID – a previously invalid number is active again.
• COMPANY_NAME_CHANGED and COMPANY_ADDRESS_CHANGED – the registered name or address changed. These fire only while the number is valid.

The first daily check sets a baseline, so no event is fired on it. If VIES or the national fallback is unavailable and the daily check cannot complete, a VIES_UNAVAILABLE webhook is delivered so you know it did not run.

How delivery works

You register an HTTPS endpoint yourself, in the dashboard under VAT monitoring. Each endpoint has a signing secret shown once at creation. Every delivery carries an X-Vatnode-Signature header you should verify before acting on the event. Failed deliveries are retried with exponential backoff, up to 5 attempts, and every attempt is logged in the dashboard.

Limits and plans

Starter includes 25 monitored VAT numbers and 3 webhook endpoints (see pricing for other plans); monitoring and webhooks aren’t available on the Free plan.
