Validation & accuracy
Does vatnode do more than just call VIES?
Yes. On top of the VIES verdict, vatnode adds a national-registry layer for several countries and returns VAT metadata for the company’s country in the same response.
National-registry layer
The country coverage reference lists exactly which countries have it. For those countries the registry layer does two things:
- It keeps returning results during VIES country-level outages, by querying the national registry directly when VIES is down.
- It can enrich the response with data VIES doesn’t carry: registration date, legal form and industry description. Depending on the country, the response can also include the registry identifier and the national tax ID, with their local names.
Without a requester VAT set in dashboard Account details, this fallback applies automatically. With a requester set, the fallback is skipped on purpose so that a result never comes back without the consultation number you opted into. The source field of each response tells you which system produced it: VIES, CACHE, or a national registry code.
VAT metadata in every response
Every response includes a countryVat object for the company’s country: the local tax name and abbreviation, the currency, the standard rate, reduced, super-reduced and parking rates, and the VAT number format. It is the same data as the VAT rates endpoint, so you can label and rate an invoice correctly in a single call – for example countryVat.vatAbbr gives MwSt for Germany and countryVat.standardRate the current standard rate.
What it doesn’t change
The registry data is enrichment only: it never overrides the valid verdict. Which fields come back depends on each country’s registry and data policy, so check the coverage reference before relying on a specific field for a specific country. To see the full response shape, read the validation endpoint reference.
