Which countries are supported?

Live validation covers all 27 EU member states plus Northern Ireland (XI), all through VIES.

Country codes

vatnode follows the VIES convention of EL for Greece, not the ISO GR. Pass EL… to /v1/vat; GR there returns INVALID_FORMAT. The VAT rates endpoint is the reverse: it takes the ISO code GR, and also accepts EL, answering it as GR.

Northern Ireland businesses use the XI prefix under the Windsor Framework. These numbers are valid in VIES and vatnode treats them the same as EU VAT numbers.

What comes back per country

Validation works the same way everywhere, but the data around the verdict differs. The coverage reference breaks this down country by country:

• which countries return company details, registration date, legal form and industry on top of the VIES verdict;
• which return a national registry identifier and a national tax ID;
• which keep validating through a national registry when VIES is down.

Rates and formats are a wider set

VAT-rate and format reference data covers 45 European VAT jurisdictions, a wider set than live validation. Number validation itself is EU-27 + XI only – see the next question for what’s outside that scope.
